BTEC Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering

BTEC Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering – Level 3
The 120-credit BTEC Level 3 Diploma broadens and expands the specialist work-related focus from the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma. There is potential for the qualification to prepare learners for employment in the appropriate vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they wish to enter a particular area of work. It is broadly equivalent to two GCE A Levels. Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a Level 3 programme. Other learners may want to extend the specialism they studied on the BTEC Level 3 Certificate or the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma programme.

BTEC qualifications, especially Level 3, are accepted by many universities when assessing the suitability of applicants for admission, and many such universities base their conditional admissions offers on a student’s predicted BTEC grades. Currently, Imperial College London is the only university in Britain not to accept BTECs at all. A report by the Social Market Foundation in January 2018 found that more than a quarter (26%) of university applicants in England entered with at least one BTEC qualification.

Key Features of the BTEC Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering:
The BTEC Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering have been developed in the engineering sector to:

-Give education and training for employees in the aeronautical engineering industries
-Give opportunities for employees in the aeronautical engineering sector to achieve a nationally recognized Level 3 vocationally-specific qualification
-Give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the aeronautical engineering sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Aerospace Engineering
-Give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life
Duration of course: 9 months

Eligibility Criteria:

O level, GCSE, Year 10 or equivalent
Fluency in English
Equivalency of BTEC Level 3 Qualification:

BTEC Level 3 Qualification is deemed equivalent to A Level, or any other equivalent high-school certificate.

On Completion of Course:

Some learners choose to progress on to BTEC Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, which is equivalent to first two years of a bachelor’s degree. Other learners use this qualification to enroll with various universities around the world.

BTEC Higher Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering (Level 4 & 5):
The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting, individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving aeronautical sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The BTEC Higher Nationals in Aeronautical Engineering is divided into two parts, as follows:

-BTEC Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering – Level 5
-BTEC Higher National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering – Level 4

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units, with the opportunity to pursue a particular interest through the appropriate selection of optional units. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for more intense subject specialization at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities.

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering – Level 5:
The Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering offers students a pathway designed to support progression into relevant occupational areas or onto the degree-level study. This pathway is linked to Professional Body standards (where appropriate) and can provide progression towards professional status or entry to the later stages of an appropriate degree. Holders of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. Through this, they will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.
